Industrial Expert at ICI, Xiamen University

Jurgen Bey, known for iconic works like the TreeTrunkBench and Earchair, also served as director of the Sandberg Institute and now being an Industrial Expert at ICI, Xiamen University. Designer-architect Rianne Makkink and designer Jurgen Bey co-founded Studio Makkink & Bey. They has built a diverse and collaborative practice spanning architecture, interior and product design, public space, exhibitions, and research — many of their projects have been awarded internationally. With over 400 projects for museums, cultural institutions, governments, and private clients, their design approach is contextual and interdisciplinary. They see urban planning, architecture, and product design as inseparable fields, where one scale influences the other — a lightbulb reshaping architecture, a skyscraper prompting the invention of the elevator. Both founders are deeply involved in design education, seeing the designer’s role as strategic — connecting elements across contexts “like stringing beads.”
